Pre-Season Preparation: Getting Your Team Match Ready

Building a Winning Pre-Season Programme
Pre-season is the foundation upon which a successful campaign is built. The work done in these crucial weeks sets the tone for the entire season, and getting it right can be the difference between success and failure.
Phase 1: General Preparation (Weeks 1-3)
The initial phase focuses on building an aerobic base and general strength. This is where we establish work capacity and address any weaknesses identified during the off-season assessment.
Phase 2: Specific Preparation (Weeks 4-6)
Training becomes more rugby-specific, with increased intensity and the introduction of contact work. Strength training shifts towards power development with Olympic lift variations and plyometrics.
Phase 3: Competition Preparation (Weeks 7-8)
The final phase focuses on match simulation, game-specific conditioning, and fine-tuning tactical preparation. Training volume decreases while intensity remains high to ensure players peak for Round 1.
Key Considerations
- Individual Assessment: Every player should be assessed at the start of pre-season to identify strengths, weaknesses, and any injury history that needs addressing.
- Progressive Loading: Build volume and intensity gradually to avoid overtraining and soft tissue injuries.
- Recovery Protocols: Quality sleep, nutrition, and active recovery strategies are just as important as the training itself.
